Music Industry Law in Nashville

We are music industry attorneys in the heart of Nashville’s Music Row, representing songwriters, artists, producers, publishers, managers, labels and catalog owners.

In detail…

In the music business, the song and the recording are the assets, and the contract decides who owns them, who controls them, and who gets paid. A single hit can generate income for decades through mechanical, performance, sync and streaming royalties. Every one of those streams runs through an agreement.

The attorneys at Shrum Disney & Associates have represented clients across all media, including music, publishing, film, television, sports and the arts. Our office sits at 54 Music Square East, in the heart of Nashville’s Music Row, and the music industry is the core of our practice. The firm has negotiated and closed thousands of music industry transactions.

Barry Shrum has taught music industry contracts and copyright at Belmont University’s Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business for nearly 20 years, training the next generation of music business professionals.

We work with songwriters signing their first publishing deal, artists negotiating with labels, producers protecting their points, and owners buying, selling or administering catalogs. Whatever side of the table you are on, we know how these deals are built, where the value hides, and what terms are worth fighting for.

The firm negotiates, drafts and reviews agreements across the music business, including:

  • Music publishing. Exclusive songwriter agreements, co-publishing and administration deals, and single-song agreements, with attention to term, delivery requirements, reversion rights and recoupment.
  • Co-writer and split sheet agreements. Clear, signed ownership splits between co-writers, so registrations with PROs and The MLC match and royalties are not held up by disputes later.
  • Recording agreements. Record deals, distribution and license agreements, and independent artist arrangements, covering royalty rates, recoupment, ownership of masters, options and 360 provisions.
  • Producer agreements. Producer and mixer agreements, points, advances, credit, and letters of direction so producer royalties are paid correctly.
  • Artist management agreements. Commission rates, term, sunset clauses, key-person terms and post-term rights, whether you are the artist or the manager.
  • Booking agency agreements. Agency agreements, performance and engagement contracts, and riders for live dates and tours.
  • Catalog sales and acquisitions. Purchase and sale of song and master catalogs, including due diligence, chain-of-title review, royalty statement analysis and closing documents.
  • Catalog administration. Copyright registration, ownership clean-up, administration agreements, and protecting catalog value for writers, heirs and estates.

From the first split sheet to the sale of a career’s catalog, we help music clients protect their rights and their income.

We are the “dealmakers.”
